<p>The 121st FS is the flying component of the wing and has operated the F-16C since 1994. It is the only ANG unit which resides in a state other than its base, as the 121st FS is operated by the District of Columbia. The unit was activated in April 1941 and mobilized five months later, before disbanding in November 1945. It was given federal recognition as the 121st Fighter Squadron in October 1946 with the P-47D. The F-84C was delivered in 1949, with the unit becoming the 121st FIS in July 1951. Re-equipped with the F-94B, mobilization preceded a return to state control in October 1952 with the F-51H assigned. The F-86A was operated from March 1954, with the F-86E in 1955 and the F-86H in 1957. The unit became a Tactical Fighter Squadron in November 1958 when it converted to the F-100A. A second period of active duty began in October 1961 until demobilization followed in August 1962. The 113th TFG was organized in October 1962. The F-100C had been assigned by January 1968, with another period of mobilization until 1969. The F-105D joined the squadron from 1971 until June 1981, when it was replaced by F-4Ds. The 113th TFG achieved Wing status in 1975, and converted to the F-16A in January 1990. Detachment 1 of the 121st TFS was organized to operate four C-22Bs and a C-21A on behalf of the National Guard Bureau Eastern Division. The latter became the 201st Airlift Squadron in March 1992.
